yes, the statue is based on the biblical david.  apparently, in florence at 
that time, they thought of themselves as david, fighting against the goliath, 
as there was a much bigger and more forceful city that was their enemy (i 
forget the name of that city, but they are still enemies to this day...if you 
visit one and they ask you which one you like better, you better choose, 
because they will not let you remain neutral!)

so, many of the artists of that time created sculptures and paintings of 
their idea of david, having won the battle against the giant or in the midst 
of killing him.

there was one artist, rapheal, maybe?, who's impression of david was much 
less masculine, more as a little boy in a heaping suit of armor, far too big 
for his little body.  however, it is michaelangelo's david that is the center 
of the town, not for creating david as he was, but creating an image of what 
he became.
