Except for that 1953 Hollywood movie starring Rita Hayworth -- there, she
performs the dance to *distract* Herod while her lover (a Roman soldier,
IIRC) tries to *rescue* John the Baptist ... but their plans fail, of
course, so they leave the palace and become followers of Jesus.

This was then transformed into an opera, which was recently adapted for
the stage by _Exotica_ and _Sweet Hereafter_ director Atom Egoyan; I think
he refers to this opera in his film _Felicia's Journey_, too. There was a
rather noisy tiff between Egoyan and The National Post's theatre critic
