There's a book called Elvis after Elvis that spends some time looking at that LA/NYC aspect of fame. It suggests that Big E would have been less miserably over-famous if he woulda just moved out of Memphis. In Hollywood, he could have mixed into the crowd. I read a blurb from David Bowie this morning that was similar--he'll never live in London again b/c the press is too in-his-face there, but wherever he lives here (presumably NY or LA), he can get some peace.

When Elvis did the famous comeback Christmas show, he was gonna do old gospel blah and one of the producers (or whatever) of the show convinced him that he needed something more daring because his popularity was waning. E was like, "No way, bubba. You know what happens to me on the streets of Memphis?" So the producer had him stand on a street corner in NY and try to get attention. He couldn't. (Details are hazy in my mind--it's been like five years since I looked at this book.)

>>so, fred- you didn't know mark shannon, did you?

I don't think I did at all.

That is all,

Fred
