Folks who don't want to read about my thoughts about churches might want
to move onto the next message.
Are we good? Fine! Off we go.
Fantasized is a strong word, but indeed, I have wondered what effects
folks such as Over the Rhine and VoL and Madison Greene might have on a
congregation at large, even my own.
Whenever I do, however, two issues hit me:
1) They're just human. And I don't mean to sound callous here to
Michael. Waht I mean is that many of us _do_ see our favorite performers
with a veneer of our own outlook and a healthy dollop of being
nigh-perfect avatars of everything we like about the world. We objectify
them because, frankly, we _don't_ know their deep achings and wonderings.
We do a little transference dance to place them in our world, but I would
much rather have my wonderful bunch of God-lovers leading us in song to
Karin and Linford. Why? Because Central Free Church is the community of
believers that is _my_ home community.
When I go to Cornerstone or a L'Abri conference, I worship with all in
attendance, and they, too, are my community. But my church is so much
more than just a place to see people I admire
That said, I would love to see them join our worship sometime - nothing
better than having new voices to raise in worship and discussion. But I
would no less want to see a friend from college who's been doing some
thinkin' about God and belief than I would a few marvelous talented Cincy
ragamuffins.
2) I know an awful lot of folks who come to church to become refreshed
and renewed, not to perform their own particular aspect of speciality.
My wife - a drama teacher - practically gets hives when someone asks her
to direct 'church skits' because it's the last thing she wants to do when
she is coming to worship (that, and she can't stand directing skits in
general). My mother, who works at a daycare, won't work the infant room
at her church because it reverts her back to her work world. I am making
an assumption here, but I wonder if Linford and Karin and Jack find
themselves wishing to pull back a bit from their professional life when/if
they attend church.
Hard to say, I guess.
