review of the Normals at Calvin College (no OTR)
So last night the Normals played in The Fish House at Calvin for free.
Being a fan of the Normals, and always one for free concerts, I went
with some friends. The setting was intimate, although perhaps a little
tight. It was cool though, because It's like a coffee shop, and we
usually have Jazz Vespers there, which I am going to read poetry for
soon. Something about sharing a stage is still exciting to me.
So anyway, The opening band was called Inside the Outside or something
like that, I think. They were good though, they had fun stage banter
and the lead singer was cute to boot.
The Normals mainly played stuff off of their new CD (release Tuesday), A
Place Where You Belong, although they played some of my favorite cuts
from Coming to Life. I was so impressed by the new music that I
implulse bought Place Where You Belong because it was so cool.
Especially the last cut, Epilogue, which has a very Beatle-esque groove
to it. I've only listened to the album a couple of times, but the other
stand out for me was Less Than Love, which has a very catchy keyboard
part.
