in the interest of spam haters (:
saw this on /. and it made me think of the list.

"Frustrated Internet users "write to the group and the volunteers kick in.
It is possible to track spam," participant Glenn Barry says. "Someone will
be able to work out where it came from.
"These spam busters are often judges, lawyers, police, investigators, debt
collectors, and some very technically skilled individuals. When these
people get annoyed they have enormous resources [on which to act]. It's
not uncommon in the newsgroup to see the criminal record of a spammer
published.
"For example, there's an American lady with a lot of resources - she can
find the records for almost any company, or court records, in a matter of
minutes. I don't know who she is but she hates spam."
Without special expertise it can be difficult to determine where spam is
coming from. Spammers often use bogus email addresses and send their
messages via a circuitous route.
"Spammers try to use sophisticated techniques to hide their tracks and
encode addresses, but to some that's just a challenge and there are some
sites that will now decode [the address and provide the host network] for
you," Barry explains."
