Re: literate music

<In college, I had an English Prof. who declared his love of U2 before the class with pride.>

i had an english prof who wanted to explain to us why they "still haven't found what they're looking for". he kept it completely subjective though, and i still don't know if he likes them or not - he was helping us learn how to do some paper he wasnted to assign and had this as his example.

<So, my question to this list is this- who or what are the most literate performers you can think of, and what works do they reference?>

the tragically hip have a song called "cordelia" (king lear's daughter from the play by shakespeare), they also do a lot based on douglas coupland's & john cage's works. and their lead singer released a solo cd and poetry book last year.

<My contribution to this subject is that group of hippie-punks from down under- Midnight Oil. (surprise!)>

that's not surprising to me in the least. my only question is: can they still rock in a live show?

<It is an out of print 1930's tale by novelist Xavier Herbert about a man discovering the truth about his aboriginal ancestry and trying to reconcile it with his role within the very racist society of Australia. Sound interesting?>

as for racism in australia, check out romper stomper, starring none other than oscar-nominee russell crowe...i'd liketo hear what others thought of this movie - the dvd comes with a second disc - a documentary about racism and skinheads

it just doesn't seem fair though - the more intelligent bands don't seem to get as much exposure to the masses as the mass-produced crap that people listen to. or maybe it's just me.
