that drove me berzerk when i lived there.  i ended up
foreshortening it to "ponce" b/c i just couldn't say
it and no one could understand you if you pronounced
it correctly.

there's a town in south jersey called "buena."  a
reasonably large hispanic population.  everyone
(including inhabitants) pronounce it BYOO-na.  

i have no idea why.
