Re: Question for Lord of the Rings readers

Why do so many Lord of the Rings readers re-read the books on a periodic basis?

I am reading Return of the King for the first time now.  Lord of the Rings is quickly becoming my favorite book, other than the Bible of course. :)  Some of the aspects of Lord of the Rings that I love about the book are: Tolkien creates people, places, customs and history that inspires the imagination. Also there are so many lessons about life one can take away from the books.
One lesson is depicted in Frodo struggle with what is his destiny and his role in the history of Middle-Earth.  Another lesson is found in Frodo's search to find strength to make the "right" decision in perilous times.  Yet another is revealed in the relationship between Legolas and Gimli.  At the Counsel of Elrond, Legolas and Gimli had a great distrust and hatred for one another because they are an elf and a dwarf respectively.  Through living life together as part of the Fellowship, Legolas and Gimli develop are great friendship with one another that moves beyond their prior prejudices of the other race.
I think there are so many wonderful things in the story of Lord of the Rings that you can't get them all the first or second or even the third time you read the books.  Not to mention it is always encouraging to revisit the things that you have learned from the books.  I can definitely see myself reading Lord of the Rings many times.  Which is saying something because, I am not a big reader.

I hope this gives you an idea about why so many are compelled to re-read the Lord of the Rings.
