I had a really hard time with the "flint tool" analogy. I still am rather
unsure of the intention. I mean, I understand that it is referring to the
starter of something, but the starter of *what*? So, I will list various
types of flint. Then my most influential. Both threads with one stone.
(er, e-mail)

Flint for my musical obsession: Queen, Greatest Hits. It was the first
tape I had that really got serious listening time in. My dad got it for
me Christmas one year about the age of eleven...and I've liked Queen ever
since.

Flint for my techno leanings: Ace of Base, The Sign. Say what you will,
but I still think it's a good album.

Flint for me on days when I need a pick-up: Fantastic Plastic Machine,
Fantastic Plastic Machine. It's good for scaring room mates, in a happy
muzak sort of way. I recommend it if you're in the mood for somethign
rather different.

Most influential album: Smashing Pumpkins, Mellon Collie and the Infinite
Sadness. It's two discs of compressed musical joy. In a non-joyful form.
Wih a wry smile on more than one track. Think of it as me, but with more
guitar.  =)

Most influential book: Madeleine L'Engle, A Wrinke In Time. Fueling my
conspiracy theories and twisted worldview for years, this book made me
think. A lot.

Most influential movie: This one's hard. I suppose it may seem a bit
taboo to say such a recent film, but I'd say American Beauty.

BTW, FWIW, IMHO, AFAIK, yes. OTOH, AAMOF, maybe not. YMMV.
