I think that's the point.  Gregorian chants don't need a rhythm section
because the singers have that internal rhythm happening.  Same with
Madrigals and Barber Shop Quartets.  If the rhythm is in the heart and
the foot, an actual "rhythm section" is only icing on the cake.
