"Selling out"

I'm with you both. In Marie's defense, I don't
find her (that is, with what little data I have
to work) to be the sort to indulge in knee-jerk
vetoing of a band's popular releases. I think
she qualifies her statement with "when they
hadn't put out so much of the very same sound."

I think she "loves music for music's sake"
(correct me if I'm wrong here, J Marie) but
expected musical development from the band that
she doesn't feel they've exhibited.

That being said, I think Dan's pet peeve to be a
good one, without all the usual irrational
trappings of pet peeves. Bugs me too.

Uh oh. Here I go again.
There are times when I *no doubt* appear guilty
of bumping Dan's fine china. Very often, the
creative integrity of a band is compromised by
either a personal drive for commercial success
("Something's got to change if they're going to
take notice, man.") or the meddlings of record
execs and producers ("Meet Lief: he'll be
arranging the strings, fellas.").

Also, I would like to assert that. . . well, I
find indie production to be charming. Very
charming. It's a poetic framework of sorts.
There is great beauty in learning to produce
maximum effect from minimum resources. I find
much inspiration in choosing limitations and in -
not just making the best of them - but revelling
in them and using them as strengths. When a band
(or a singer/songwriter type, for that matter)
has limitless resources to play with, it tends to
get creatively complacent and flabby.
