Mark Sandman, lead singer and bassist of the Boston-based trio Morphine,
suffered a fatal heart attack while performing at a music festival near Rome
on Saturday. Sandman was 46.
Sandman collapsed onstage during the second day of the three-day music
festival at the Giardini del Principe in Palestrina, Italy, just before
midnight on Saturday, according to the Associated Press. He was treated
backstage by a doctor at the venue, but was pronounced dead while being
transported to a nearby hospital.
"We don't even know what to say," commented Morphine's manager, Deborah
Klein, to the AP. "His music was completely special and unique. People loved
him."
According to "The Boston Herald," Sandman's death caught friends off-guard,
as he wasn't known to have a history of heart problems or any serious
illness that could have attributed to the heart attack, although he was said
to have been a heavy smoker
Sandman and saxophonist Dana Colley formed Morphine with drummer Jerome
Dupree back in 1990, and the moody, beat noir outfit released its indie
debut, "Good," in 1991. Dupree was subsequently replaced by Billy Conway, a
bandmate of Sandman's from an earlier band, Treat Her Right.
Morphine enjoyed some of its greatest commercial and critical success with
1993's "Cure for Pain" and the single and video for "Thursday" brought the
band's eclectic sound to the forefront of the then-burgeoning alt-rock
scene.
The group followed up that record with two more studio albums, "Yes" in 1995
and "Like Swimming" in 1997. In addition to his work with Morphine, Sandman
also dabbled with Chris Ballew from the Presidents of the United States of
America in a side project called Supergroup. Ballew and Morphine also
collaborated on a song that was included on "The Mod Squad" soundtrack.
A live Morphine album was tentatively set for release via Dreamworks Records
in early October, and "The Boston Herald" reported that the baritone-voiced
Sandman was working on another project. It wasn't immediately known what
effect Sandman's death would have on those releases.
A private service for Sandman's friends and family will be held on Friday in
Boston. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made
to the Mark Sandman Music Education Fund that will benefit Cambridge public
schools.
Contributions should be sent to:
