review of bogarts
hey everyone.
first of all, i want to say that i had an absolutely fabulous time in
cincinnati. i went and stayed in my friend's dorm room (he got me
sick...ack!) in daniels, which was an interesting time. thursday night, drew
was nice enough to let me crash at his place. gotta love his dog. stanley
is absolutely adorable.
anyway, friday. after helping my friend greg get ready for his frat's pimp
and ho party (he was a ho, so i had to help him get dressed and such) we
walked over to daniels. i walked in about a quarter to seven, to find drew
and brucey sitting sitting with a very attractive guy with very little hair.
after bruce introduced him to me as dan, i said, "from dayton?" and that was
affirmed. shortly after i just *had* to, and that was the beginning of my
going up to dan randomly and rubbing his head. *sigh* i *love* it. anyway,
i wanted a beer, so i ran downstairs to the bar (where brucey friend didn't
card me...i guess he remembered me from when we hung out for brucey and my
birthdays. anyway, i ran back upstairs and sat down when a lovely girl with
short brown hair and a brown dress with flowers came up and asked if we were
the listies. i knew it was stef, and i introduced myself and said, "it was
the dress, wasn't it?" she said yes.
we all convened downstairs at a large table, drew, dan, brucey, drew's friend
yvonne, stef and her anderson friends...and later ron, brucey's friends brad
and trish, and drew's friends brian and laura. lots of conversation and food
and shots of alcohol (daniels does not skimp on their shots, let me tell you!
that shot of jage was *huge*!). the show was supposed to start at 8:30, but
some people didn't have any desire to see nikki, and brucey had to wait for
ysoie and gardner because he had their tickets, so we hung out a little
longer. finally, though, we decided to head over, and as we were walking,
there were ysoie and gardner walking towards us. they were a little shook up
because of an accident they were witness to, so i let ysoie tell me about it
and vent a little. i think it was good for them to come and see us...listies
calm each others nerves.
we went inside (my friend jamie was working the door) and immediately went to
find mr. emery and kyle. toast was with them (he's so TALL) and it was an
absolute pleasure to meet him (even if he did make me cry later in the
evening). i think it was kyle who directed me to the back to buy the cds,
and brucey's friend brian was nice enough to take all eight of them to
brucey's car (two for mark in holland, three for amy romania, one for my
stevieboo, and two for myself). after that ysoie decided that we had to go
up front, where there were all these horribly rude people, but we went up
there, dan in tow, and kyle came by later. during the second half gardner
found me and told me that the beautiful lynzi had arrived. he took me across
the floor to find her and jay standing together. she spilled some water on
me as i hugged her, and then i hugged jay, as this was the first time we had
met. spent the rest of the concert over against the edge of the building,
and i ended up seeing my friend dan from chorus at uc, which was nice.
after the concert we convened outside bogarts and talked about going to the
blind lemon. jay ran to his car to grab the maps, and we all waited around
while drew bailed on us, not even saying goodbye. (yep...we're all pretty
bitter about that). we finally piled into cars and walked in, although it
sucked a mite bit because anyone under the age of twenty-one were not allowed
to join us. so stef and her friends had to leave. i'm sorry, guys! anyway,
it was nice with an open fire, even though i was tired and cold and toast
made me cry. (it was all because i was exhausted...i swear!). then brucey
took me to the greyhound station and i sat on a crowded bus for six hours,
and came to work for twelve and a half. it was a interesting day. but i
only started to nod off once, and that wasn't while i was near any machinery,
so it was ok.
as for the show:
*setlist*
1.) all i need is everything
the set up for the band was kind of telling in a way. linford, karin and
jack all up front, lots of lights on them. then the bassist (was his name
dave?_, brian and terri all in the back. brian had light on him, probably so
he could see his instruments, but i could hardly see terri. she looked
unhappy, but then, she has for the past couple of times i've seen her. dan
asked me if she would bring out her violin, i said, "probably not" which
disappointed him immensely.
2.) tumbleweeds
was so glad to hear this one. it was my favorite of the new ones.
3.) little blue river
glad they played this one. poor toast told me he's been waiting for them to
throw this on an album since, when was it? '94?
4.) moth
5.) goodbye
boy did this one miss brian and terri at kent! i'm so sad it's not on the
new cd. maybe on the new new one?
6.) june
ysioe: oh my g-d! they really are goth!
chris emery: i love you brian!
(that was proclaimed several times throughout the show!)
one thing i noticed about this crowd: they know they're over the rhine.
while in kent no one was mouthing words (with the exception of us listies),
people next to me where singing along with karin. it was very refreshing.
unfortunately, the only time you could really hear terri was when karin
wasn't singing. oh, and JACK RAWKS!
7.) faithfully dangerous
i love the new way they play this one. it makes it stand out from the rest
of good dog bad dog. i personally wanted her to slip up and transpose words
again, but alas, it was not to be. linford was gazing at her again. she is
*so* lucky.
8.) anyway
she finally spoke to her audience, for more than saying thank you. she told
us the story about how she wrote it for her sister, the one we all have
heard. she also told us that rose is getting married and she is giving rose
away. how nice.
9.) i will remember
this is when the little cow told me to make sure i have that down. as nikki
said when i told her, "ok, i will, thanks." and chris, no, it wasn't the guy
in the cow suit.
10.) lucy
11.) a gospel number
it was really nice to hear this one!
12.) jack's valentine
this was where lynzi spilled water on me. *grrr* it's ok, though, love. it
was wonderful seeing you.
at the end of this song jay says: they're going to go into reggae. they
didn't though. although it would have been interesting.
13.) circle of quiet (funny, i have that playing in the background right now)
they certainly talked more at kent. karin does do introductions after this
song. funny to listen to the amount of appalause given. i think brian got
just as much (if not a little more) than linford...
14.) latter days
thanks for the hugs, gardner
*encore*
karin comes out by herself and does a very strange version of *paul and
virginia* she says she doesn't know the last time she sang this so we have
to sing along. and the first time she sang the chorus she stopped and said,
"i heard some of the parts out there." but she sang "paul and virzinia" or
something that was very, very odd. she is very beautiful.
linford joins her and they do *rhapsodie*.
jay said they have to do *my love is a fever* for him, and what do you know?
they did! it was just for you, sweetheart. anyway, the rest of the band
joined them for this one.
and they closed with *go down easy*. wish i could have heard you singing
*latter days* lyrics with it, toast!
well, those are my notes on the show. hope you're happy, amy romania.
and to all the listies i met/saw on friday...in the order of appearance:
drew: thanks for thursday. i had fun. and i don't know what you mean about
danger.
brucey: i think you owe me something. thanks for driving me to the
greyhound station. next time we'll talk more.
dan: thank you for everything. i love your hair. *love it* and i'll
e-mail you back soon. and sorry we ruined karin's diction for you. it *is*
atrocious half the time!
stef: so sorry we didn't get a chance to talk more. you are absolutely
beautiful (i love your hair, too), and i would love to spend more time
talking to you. do write to me. and we'll talk online.
ron: you were hard to talk to. a little quiet. but you're really nice.
you should talk more. really! and post some more, too!
ysoie: i'll see you on friday? laga? goth night? i get off work at six,
so i'm free to go out.
gardner: we'll talk.
kyle: so, did i make it up to you?
chris: always a pleasure. always.
toast: ah, darling. so tall, wonderful voice, nice hugger. i *do* need
help, i know it, and normally i wouldn't have completely broken down, but i
was *so* tired. and i was getting sick. and there were some underlying
things on my mind. it was ok. really. thanks for caring, though.
lynzi: we need time for frolicking and making mischief, my dear. we'll
speak soon.
jay: how gorgeous you are! wish i could have spent more time with you.
(here it gets really fuzzy as to whom i met when)
megan: nice to say hi to you! come hang out next time.
lisa walker: this woman, ladies and gentleman, is the epitome of gorgeous.
i'm glad we got to talk some in the bathroom. i hope to see you again
sometime in the near future.
andy: sorry for scaring you. :)
i think that was everyone? i don't remember...it's monday and i worked a
*lot* this weekend. our manager wasn't there this weekend, so the assistant
manager had to take care of everything, and i ended up being the person she
vented to. i also had to help out the new people when she wasn't around.
but one of the supervisors saw me thinking quick on my feet and getting us
out of trouble, which means bonus points for me.
but i got sick. and now my throat hurts a lot. *sigh* can't win them all,
i guess.
ok, i'm going to shut up now. i'm sure everyone is tired of reading this
now. kudos to those who made it all the way to the end.
