RE: The Right to Bear Wood

(snip)

Back in high school one of my classmates was shot in the back and killed
while running away from a crime. The crime: stealing a battery out of a
car from what ended up being a retired cops residence. The cop was the
one who shot him. The punishment: a slap on the wrist. I don't remember
the case details on why that's all he got -- something about him still
being on the cops property -- but he was unarmed and shot in the back
for heaven's sake.
 (Snip)

Should he have been shot? No. Should the cop have been punished more
severely? Yes. But the fact remains that the kid was stealing, not walking
by aimlessly. The punishment did not fit the crime; I'm not arguing that.
I just don't know how to balance the fact that the kid was obviously not
worried about and perceived consequences enough to not steal.

That being said, I wish the cop had used a 32-inch Louisville Slugger to the
knees instead.

Back to lurking.
