Andre 3000 (Outkast) THE LOVE BELOW (Visionary Rock/Funk/Hip-Hop/R&B on the
order of Prince or George Clinton)
Johnny Cash UNEARTHED (I realized last night that American has released as
much new music on Unearthed as Cash had released with the label in the last
10 years. And it's still hard to point a finger to any material that would
be categorized as "filler.")
Evanescence FALLEN (The new darlings. Ah, I knew them when... Honestly, the
diversity of material made their first cd, ORIGIN, somewhat stronger than
the current effort. But FALLEN is the band's vision realized on a grand
scale with many hints of greater things to come.)
The Fire Theft THE FIRE THEFT (Nicely continues the prog-rock experiments
begun previously as Sunny Day Real Estate.)
Madonna AMERICAN LIFE (Not every song is worthy, and for some reason
Maverick keeps releasing the worst tracks as singles. But some songs, like
"Love Profusion" and "Mother Father," are quite exceptional and show the
record to be much stronger than the critics and consumers initially
supposed.)
Over The Rhine OHIO (The best album of the year. Soulful, Spiritual,
Sensual. Usually all within the same song. Multiply that by 21.)
SnailhuntR ORIGIN OF THE SPIRAL (This one is really putting my money where
my mouth is. My company released this cd in late summer after chasing the
band that recorded it for nearly two years. It's like They Might Be Giants,
The Flaming Lips, Radiohead, and Frank Zappa all met in a glorious bus
wreck.)
Starflyer 59 OLD (Sensing a new re-invention on the horizon, Jason Martin
turns in an insightful and catchy effort about the continuing -- and often
unsuccessful -- quest to LIVE rather than just survive.)
Rufus Wainwright WANT ONE (Rufus is a drama queen. But so long as that
means he creates records like this with a grand sense of theatre and
intimacy, so be it.)
The White Stripes ELEPHANT (Truly epic. Who woulda thunk it from a retro,
lo-fi, punk-inspired, bluesy, rave-up, high-on-the-novelty,
ex-husband-and-wife, two-piece rock act most assumed last year would be a
Mtv flavor of the month and then forgotten? ELEPHANT borrows liberally from
the Rock 'N' Roll playbook while writing new notes in the margins. Sure,
Meg White couldn't drum her way out of a wet Krispy Kreme bag, but the band
succeeds best when it acknowledge its limitations--and in fact sets new
obstacles in its path--and then overcomes them with tenacity, passion, and
creativity.)
