RE: Spreading the Good News about OTR

Though I will not claim to be a supporter of WDET, or the two air hosts Bill Keith mentioned, I do know from the past experience other artists--signed to majors or not--have had: that calling or writing Judy Adams or Martin Bandyke will NOT be helpful to OTR's cause. In fact, it will only hinder it because they will see it as a kind of groundswell by fans and therefore, somehow, "dishonest," which is ridiculous. I'm not a musician, I'm a writer andlistener who speaks only for himself, so I have no prejudice based on airplay of any project I am or ever was involved in; I only know what I surmise from the evidence over the years and what has happened to other artists I have encountered in my work and have told me, and what I can gather from people who have actually done what Bill proposes. This is myu opinion, nothing more, and further, it is my opinion that the programming establishment at WDET is hopelessly entrenched in their limited, Luddite idea of "hipness," --given the first song of a Martin Bandyke set, I can predict for the most part what will be played next in genre, tempo, and often, artist. WDET is nothing more than Yuppie radio. Over The Rhine has gained a fanbase in the Detroit area the hard way, by word of mouth and by touring endlessly--that fan base will certainly widen as time goes on, and will remain solid because of the band's commitment to is music and fans, not the dillentantes at Detroit radio. I have great respect for Bill Keith and do not wish to contradict him, kjust to make other Michganders aware that I have seen this type of thing backfire before. Let's hope that with each suceeding album OTR's profile becomes greater to the poiunt where they don't need WDET--who would coopt them anyway as they have done with dozens of other artists, claiming to have "broken them" in Detroit despite the hard work and exposure of other media outlets. Three cheers to Bill for his dedication and ambition and three more for WHFR.

Hi

I have a few ideas to spread the good news about OTR.

1. With the holidays coming I plan to get a few people a copy of "Ohio"
for Christmas. I just heard from a friend who is having a baby in March
and I figure Over the Rhine's music would also be perfect for her as she
gets ready to have her new boy.

2. I was at the Ann Arbor show and was blown away. I brought my fiance.
She never heard Over the Rhine and she loved the show. We also so Ric
Hordinski in concert the week before. Ric's new album is beautiful and
his show was one of the best I've seen by him. He even played his cover
of Charlie Peacock, and added a Bruce Cockburn cover too.

I was thinking, wouldn't it be cool to have a show that rivaled the Taft
show in Ann Arbor at the Michigan Theatre. We could get all the fans in
the area to bring friends and encourage many others to come. That theatre
is beautiful and would be a wonderful place to see the band. If we can
get 300-400 at the Ark and everyone brought a couple friends we could have
at least 1,000.

3. I found a copy of the radio release of Ohio at a used record store.
I'm thinking of sending it to a local radio station. One of the hosts has
played Over the Rhine before and I'm sure she would love this CD.

4. WDET in Detroit should be playing Over the Rhine. I can't figure why
they don't. One of their fill in hosts has. His name is Jere Stormer
(and he's a fine local musician). If you ever here Jere filling in you
should call him and request Over the Rhine. For that matter call Martin
Bandyke and Judy Adams and request them too.

5. One Detroit area station that has played Over the Rhine is WHFR. You
can check them out at whfr.fm and listen on line. You can also search by
artist names and find all the times Over the Rhine has been played.

Here are all the times since January:
