Re: old & new

Hi, welcome to the orchard.

I guess I don't see Ohio as really a departure... maybe as the next step
for an artist. Its so stylistically all over the place people have
claimed to hear lots of the older albums in various songs. Some of my
favorite parts of Ohio sound most like _Good Dog Bad Dog_, which I am
particularly attatched to. I think it shares the bareness, the
vulnerability of some of the songs on Ohio. Ask someone else, and you
might get an entirely different answer :)

Hi Melissa,

I'm relatively new to OtR's music myself. It's probably semantics, but it seems to me that each of their albums has been a rather courageous "departure" from the one preceding it, and they don't really resemble one another too much stylistically (a classic example of artistic progression). I would agree with Bethany that Good Dog Bad Dog is closest to Ohio in terms of its vulnerable tone and spare production. It was my first exposure to their music, and is still my personal favorite among their albums. Chances are good you'll end up owning all of them eventually, there's really not a weak one in the bunch and they're all "straight from the heart" in their own unique way. I would also recommend their live album Amateur Shortwave Radio in the short term, as it provides a good indication of the amazing breadth of their repertoire over the first ten years of their career.

And I would definitely encourage you to see them live at your earliest opportunity.

Welcome to the list! :)
