Regarding OHIO
Sorry for the repeat. We got some e-mails from people who heard about the
following info but didn't receive it, so we're trying again.
Thanks!
OHIO - Review
"We believe ourselves to be mortal, just as a madman believes himself to be
God."
Vladimir Nabokov
If you're like me, your Over the Rhine songs come at you from a planet of
creaking woodfloors, ancient neon, rusty refinement, and pipe smoke. The albums
are situated in a country beyond fashion and innovation yet somehow grounded in
a continuity with Capra films, the Beats, and any American childhood.
Everything is holy and heartbreaking and soaked in more meaning than our heads can
hold.
And here comes the double album, state-sized, OHIO. More of the same,
certainly, but slightly more imposing, more made flesh. The poetry pulls it off.
Terrestrial and celestial, lighter and heavier, grounded (in Ohio, after all) and
mobile, angelheaded ethereal as ever and still, somehow, bloodier than blood.
Resistance poetry in a day of universal panic. A stronghold of sanity in a
soundbite, psychopath culture. Plenty of time to talk and think again and wonder
which dreams might be poisonous, which impulses demonic, which stranger a new
frontier. Music to discern to.
Sometimes OHIO is like a lengthy and radical reinterpretation of some old,
hidden, Sam Cooke tunes. It feels like it's coming from outside of time like a
bunch of forgotten classics. Surely the opener, "B.P.D.", was featured, crying
out loud, in the credits of some early seventies, animated film. And wasn't
"Jesus in New Orleans" playing in the background of a death scene in one of
those early Robert Altman films? The one with Warren Beatty?
The sound of all creation regretting. The whole human race dreading,
anticipating, and dying for a change to come. In the meantime, only broken hearts can
sing, and all manner of things will be made new, sooner or later. And pain,
like pained laughter, makes us see each other differently as we hit the bottom
and get set free.
If you're an enthusiast of the woodcuts (Patience), the universe of Michael
Wilson's photography, and the exquisite ape sticker associated with the Good
Dog Bad Dog recording, all the imagery (literal) of the alternative dimension
that is Over the Rhine, I'd like to propose "Idea #21 (Not Too Late) " as the
official state song, the National Anthem even, of this landscape. It is all
eyes, all longing, and all straining forward to what lies ahead. Sail and anchor.
All aboard.
