mailing list vs. message board?

going to the archives page today to look up past post's, i
notice there's several i've yet to get.  

never saw ben's post praising the same quote i did from
jeffrey's review last week, never received bruce's 'i speak
american' and 'david labruyere' posts or dan's 'brain transeau'
post, and i have yet to receive ysoie's and aaron's jewel
replies from today.  no doubt there's more, those are just what
my eyes caught right away.

everytime i wander around CJ's board, Hem's board, anybody's
board... i think how cool it would be to have that format for
our own little OtR.  

how wonderful it would be to have a whole section just for show
reviews, or official announcements, or christianity, or
books/movies/culture, or your everyday B.S.

i don't know how message boards work in terms of setting up,
cost, running, etc.  but i do know most artists use them instead
of mailing lists and getting delayed posts or not getting them
at all is making me extra pissy today.  there may be pro's to
mailing lists i've not considered, or con's to message boards. 
i can't be alone in this thought.  so please folks, whether you
agree or disagree, comment on this one?
