old-school Genesis is fun. Gabriel went on to do
some interesting stuff on his own. "new"-school
Genesis went on to become a pretty good pop-band.
did anyone get Genesis' last album? the one after
Phil Collins left? yeah, exactly. i don't own
*any* Genesis, but i like 'em fairly alright.

i don't know what era King Crimson that i like...
probably not the old-school. i like the Adrian
Belew, Tony Levin, Robert Fripp-related line-ups.
what was that... Vroom, B'boom, Thrak, Discipline?
Yeah, that and _Red_ would sum up my KC liking.

i like just about all-schools of King's X. my fav
would definitely be _Dogman_, though it was sort of
their first non-proggy album. they never really
struck me as a prog band anyway, but rather more of
a band of really good musicians. all the way from
_Out of the Silent Planet_ (1998) to _Manic Moonlight_
(2002) and beyond are enjoyable to my ears.

i had the Kansas boxset for a while. i dig the music
a bunch, but some of it just tastes too much like
the 70s to me. prog excess, indeed. ended up getting
rid of it. they do have some classics, though. the
instrumental break in "Carry On Wayward Son" is a
truly great musical moment, IMO.

i like scattered-era Galactic Cowboys... _Space In
Your Face_ is their quintessential album, and they
have high and low points on about every other album.
their final album, _Let It Go_, is probably my 2nd
fav.

Atomic Opera's debut album _For Madmen Only_ is one
of my Top albums of all-time. their 2nd album had
a few good tracks, but left off "Hammer" (which i
really want on a CD). their third album (not incl.
the demo releases), _Gospel Cola_, glew boats. it
was a waste of time and money, IMO. hopefully,
Frank Hart will do something fun next...

no one's mentioned Pink Floyd. they're one of the
most essential prog acts out there. they were *way*
ahead of their time.

i used to be huge into a lot of neo-prog, but a lot
of it just sounds the same. of the few redeeming
in that lot that i like, though... echolyn stands
out. Superior (from Germany) is also good, but
sometimes a throw-back to 80s metal in the vocal
realm. i used to dig Threshold, but have since given
up on them. oh, and of course Ozric Tentacles...
but they're sort of a mix between prog and acid.

their former guitarist has some prog-worthy chops.

i'll shut up now.

no surprises,
Dan
