I remember reading a book about 15 or 16 years
ago where a guy was a huge fan of a noted
photographer. He wanted to send a letter to his
idol, but he wanted to ensure a response. So in
his letters, he commented not just about how big
of a fan he was -- but how did the photographer
compose the picture, what kind of film did he
use, what kind of camera and lenses? What about
the lighting and the angles? In short, he was
showing an interest in the photographer's work
that went beyond the trivial.

This has always stuck with me, and put pressure
on myself to try the same thing with bands and
artists I most apt to talk to -- like OTR. I find
myself acting out the conversation I'd try to
have, and I come up short. Because I don't write
music, I can't talk about creating music. Because
I don't play piano or guitar, I can't ask
detailed questions about that.

So I end up hearing myself say things like, "Wow,
you have a great voice, Karin." And: "I just love
your music." Or: "'Good Dog Bad Dog' is my
favorite album."

If Karin and Linford had a nickel for every time
they heard these things ...

It's not that I'm starstruck -- I know they're
real people like you and I, and they want to be
treated as such.

Maybe I could relate this way by way of Ohio: "My
sister-in-law lives in Columbus." Or: "My brother
spent a year locked up at the state prison in
Lancaster" (for the record, busted for pushing
acid at a Greatful Dead show at whatever the
nearby lake is).
