Athens rambling

So you visit Athens occasionally? Athens is a great town; I live about half
an hour from there, and it's one of my favorite places to hang out. I love
how eclectic the whole area is! I actually passed Michael Stipe walking
down Clayton Street a couple of years ago. All I could say was "how are
you," and he replied "fine, thanks" and kept walking. REM have been known
to play shows at small venues in Athens under pseudonyms, so I'm always
looking for band names that sound too strange to be true when I check
concert listings there.

Mindy, next time you're in Athens, check out Speakeasy, if you haven't
already. It's on Broad Street next to Harry Bissett's. All you can see
from the street is a stained glass sign with an S on it, but walk underneath
it and you'll see the door and the menu posted on the wall. Try the coconut
shrimp. Mmmmmmmmmm...

Nightswimming... what a great song. Its from their Automatic for the People
album. The origin of the album title is a little southern soul food
restaurant in Athens, GA called Weaver D's Delicious Fine Foods. Their
slogan is "Automatic for the People." If you ask for something, Weaver D
will hand it to you and reply, "Automatic!" That's customer service for ya,
whatever you want, you've got it. Automatic. My sister and I have family and
friends in Athens, so during a visit we took a little trip to Weaver D's and
ate collard greens and grits and bought souvenir t-shirts. REM is one of my
all-time favorite bands, so I was ridiculously giddy and out of character.
Just the idea of eating where REM used to hang out in their earlier days was
almost too much for me.

Anyway, just rambling... that post brought back some good memories.
