linford makes me happy. :) *note...this is an extremely long review*
hi kids! this is going to be a long review...since i am sending the stuff
for both of the philly shows. :)
so, i got to ysoie's apartment at about 3:30 yesterday, and we kept ourselves
busy by shopping and chatting and cleaning until don's flight was to arrive.
after driving around the extremely dismantled and confusing philadelphia
airport, we finally found him, and we were on our way to the tin angel.
yeah, the tin angel is *really* little. really little. it is long and
skinny, and there didn't seem to be enough room on stage for the three
performers, much less the six that had been on stage the last time they
played!
so, here's the set list...with additional comments, as always! we thought we
were going to be late, and we did get really icky seats, but the opening act
hadn't even started by the time we got there, so it was all good. :)

ENCORE: latter days
the opening strains of *bothered* play until linford cuts out...before karin
even started singing. apparently there was something wrong with his pedal.
they fixed that and the false start was over, but i think karin was still
singing in her head because she started singing the second verse first. she
stopped and laughed, and came in with "she kept it safe in a chest with a
key." don turned to me and said, "now all we need is for jack to mess up!"
karin mentioned that *anything at all* hadn't been recorded yet, but that
there were several bootlegs out there...and that she even had one. :)
*jesus in new orleans* had to be the funniest thing i have ever seen.
linford pulls out his accordian and tells this nice story about how they were
playing in a church basement outside of philadelphia where a lady gave him
this instrument. he then told us that he didn't know what the buttons do,
and that he only plays half of the instrument. well, apparently the buttons
were tired of being neglected and they got stuck...so, linford proceeded to
BEAT the accordian. because, you know, that's therapy. anyway, karin just
laughs and laughs, she and jack try to keep the song going as linford has his
back to the audience, performing *therapy* on this poor rebelling instrument.
finally karin just says, "just turn around and play the piano!" to which
linford finally took off the accordian. then, of course, he starts playing
in the wrong key. the look on karin's face when she sang "you're still my
favorite loser" was absolutely priceless.
they played *green swallow clouded tail* next, which is absolutely my
favorite of all of the new songs. i really love this song. i didn't know a
green clouded swallow tail was a butterfly, though. yeah, i'm real dumb.
*i radio heaven* was beautiful and extemely powerful, as always. the more i
hear this stripped down version, the better i like it.
*little blue river* was the brunt of don and my games and laughing, as we
were still able to remember megan's interpretive dance. we shared this dance
with ysoie, and she just told us that we were horrible. but she still
cracked a smile! later, when karin started to sing the hymn, ysoie asked if
this was a real hymn or if they had written it themselves. we told her that
it was an actual hymn, but that this version is ten times more appealing than
the hymn the way it is done in church. at least, the way it is done in *my*
church. it always sounds like a beer drinking song to me, and that's just
wrong.
*faithfully dangerous* was nice.
*holy rain* they mentioned that a lot of people had downloaded this song
from their website, and that it had become a favorite from jack's cd. you
can only buy this cd through his website, though (which reminds me, i need to
go and do that...who knew that his voice would grow on me?!). ysoie says:
"one word...theremin"
jack left the stage then, as he always does, and they played *the world can
wait* yum. ysoie says: "bonnie tyler's *total eclipse of the heart*.
next linford leaves, and karin sings *ohio*. we like this song, too. a lot.
the whole band came out again, and don and i were convinced that they would
play *like a radio/ain't no sunshine*. no such luck. they mentioned the
tribute album, and told people that they should buy it. then they dedicated
this song to anyone who had travelled *miles* to see them! yeah, that would
be don and myself! :)
they came out and did *latter days* as an encore. and you know, even though
_gdbd_ isn't my favorite cd of theirs, this song definitely holds a lot of
weight with me. the number of music therapy sessions i have used this for in
incredible...and since i want to work with those dying from AIDS, the
implications of this song alone are astronomical.
the end of the first show...we met tim, who is on the list but never posts
(HI TIM!). he's very nice, and hung around to try to talk to karin and
linford, but they tried to kick him out before they were ready to come out
and talk. as many of you know, ysoie had asked people to send
gifts/presents/cards/well wishes for karin and her mother, and last night was
the night we presented the box of wonders to karin. ysoie bought a wooden
box and painted it green, with silver leaves. they were beautiful! the box
was filled with things...a book from *out there* barry, a homemade book of
inspirational quotes from rose, a picture of gilhamilton dying his hair, and
a get-well note from brad (wilson? williams? something with a w). the
cinnamon candle i had wrapped in pretty pink construction paper did not fit
in the box, and neither did the beautiful hand-made lai from michelle in
hawaii. but all of the presents got to karin safe and sound, and she was
incredibly touched...incredibly. of course, silly ysoie forgot to put her
own gift into the box! but peace and veggies david (whom i met last night!!)
will take it to the lancaster show tomorrow, and it's all good.
since we couldn't get food at the tin angel and don was starving, ysoie saved
our awesome seats up front while he and i went down the street...we got a
cheesesteak and some fries to share...we came back right as rich and jennie
stearnes were finishing up their set.
karin, linford and jack had set up the stage prior to coming out, and we
noticed that karin's box and other gifts were sitting up on stage, right next
to her chair. it was her way of telling us how special that was...
don and i thought that they would do the same exact set list, with two
changes. he didn't know what two changes they would be, and i called *all i
need* instead of *faithfully dangerous*, and *like a radio* instead of
*latter days*. i was right...to a certain extent, but the two shows were
completely different, aside from six songs...(and of course, they were all my
favorites songs that i like to put on repeat in the car anyway! :) ).

oh my goodness, kids...as funny as the first set was, the second set was just
as rocking! they were AMAZING last night.
as karin sang *like a radio/ain't no sunshine* people started cheering and
yelling...she was absolutely wailing. goodness, she's amazing. amazing.
we were *very* excited to hear *orphan girl*...that was when we discovered
that it was to be a completely different set than before. things perked up a
lot then, and we acted as a little cheering section. karin kept smiling out
into the audience...i don't think i've ever seen them so close up before!
before *jesus in new orleans* linford brought out the accordian, and someone
groaned a little bit...i know i made a comment! karin said that someone must
have been there from the first show, and they explained what happened. then
linford demonstrated how the accordian sounds when the buttons stick...he
said it was kind of hard to incorporate that into a song, but if igor
stravinsky could do it, he'll work on it. they played the song without
incident this time. it was funny...linford said that they had been playing
for 13 years, and someone (don) had described the first set as the funniest
show they had ever seen. after demonstrating the throes of the accordian,
karin announced that they didn't want the late show to miss out on anything
from the first show. ha ha ha.
the introduction to *green clouded swallow tail* was the same as before,
except she mentioned how her mother had had a rough year, and that some of
the listees had gotten together and made her a box of presents. she thanked
us very much. :)
before *circle of quiet* karin said that a gentleman in boston, who had given
her some roses a few nights prior, had requested it, so she couldn't very
well say no! then she said she had remembered it the other night, so she
would try to remember it again. don said he is so used to hearing ric sing
it now, but it was refreshing to hear one of their older songs (ha
ha...patience haters! *wink*)
*anyway* was played after karin said that this was the part of the tour where
they began to get bored by doing all of the old songs. they said that they
were trying to pull out old songs that they hadn't done in a while.
*curse these dreams* and *holy rain* were nice...karin told the story of how
linford and jack had met at a place in england called "the seahorse" where
many musicians came and played and sat and talked.
jack left, as he always does, and karin and linford started whispering on
stage. they claimed they were breaking up the grocery list for when they go
home, but when they pulled out *rhapsodie*, it was apparent that they hadn't
been speaking of food. at the end of *rhapsodie*, this guy sitting next to
me, who's name was eric, told me that it had just hit him how perfect a
wedding song it would be. i just grimaced and said, "yeah, we're not going
to discuss that at all." the only line that made me teary eyed, though, was
the "and if you should ever leave..." line, which finally started to mean
something to me, after a year.
jack came back, and they mentioned the tribute album again, playing *miles*.
yum. it really is a good little song.
as an encore, don and i were trying to figure out what they would play. he
asked me if i thought it would be *jack's valentine* and i said that i
couldn't think of what else it could be. all i can say is that i felt like i
had wronged someone, listening to that version of *jack's valentine*, when
the previous crowd had listened to *latter days*. i just felt...bad. it was
incredible...i like it more and more every time i hear it.
then they began to play *lucy*...TWO ENCORES? wow. now i really feel bad.
you know, i didn't even recognize it when linford began playing it...i am so
accustomed to bink's opening strains. *laughing*
after the show we stayed to talk to karin and to linford. we took pictures
of the box and gifts up on stage, and we also took a picture of karin wearing
michelle's lai. :) michelle, we'll get you a copy of that as soon as
possible...she really loved it!
and for all of you who are planning on attending an over the rhine show soon,
karin informed us how much they love crowds that sing along, and that scream
and yell. they feed off of that, and so, yell and scream and cheer for them!
they like it! :)
the show was amazing. both of them were fun and phenomenal. i met peace and
veggies david and his friend sonya, both of whom are fabulous.
unfortunately, they had to leave a little early because sonya had to work
early in the morning, but david showed up at ysoie's last night to spend the
night. yeah, he snores real loud. but so does don...and don started snoring
first. *grin* i just laid on ysoie's mattress in the middle of the floor
and tried to drown it all out, hugging my stuffed elephant.
and tonight, rent-a-don is cooking! we will let you know if this is an
actual prospect for future reference. :) plus i get to meet liesel tonight.
YAY!
if anyone actually made it this far, congrats! sorry this was so long, but
the shows were great. :)
