I always thought the premise of the song was pretty well summed up in the
opening chorus, and the support came from the verses, so I just changed the
verses some to suit me more.
Every few months I'll go into some strange studio and record my own demo
songs with musicians I half-know. For the last few of these, I'd also
recorded versions of "Happy?" that were more honest and even more lyrically
altered, but just wasn't ready for those to be released I guess. So at the
last ditch I pieced something together quick-like, and it still says
essentially what I wanted to say.
Here's my little accountant's lyric analysis of the Over the Rhine vs. Bruce
Lachey versions of "Happy with Myself?".
The 26 lyrics both have in common:
a, and, been, build, don't, happy, have, heaven, I, I'm, it, I've, just,
letter, maybe, of, please, takes, that, the, to, trying, what, with, words,
you
The 27 lyrics OtR's has that mine doesn't:
angels, better, could, crowns, dance, front, hard, here, in, jars, little,
mason, mirror, myself, needles, on, or, pins, practice, say, some, thorns,
three, too, try, two, years
The 28 lyrics mine has that OtR's doesn't:
again, all, aren't, believe, but, chorus, come, filled, for, I'll, inside,
life, me, mind, mixed, my, myself, never, over, paper, really, repeat,
someday, stay, they, things, truly, words
Words are fun,
Bruce
