"Conservatives" And "Liberals"

A long, long time ago, before the nineteenth century, the
"conservatives" in the European powers supported the power of the
monarch, and the "liberals" pushed for the right of capitalists to do
their laissez-faire thing.

American "liberalism" is most famous for the radical Republicans, who,
before the Civil War built a party to fight "the twin barbarisms of
slavery, and (Mormon) polygamy."

The combinations of views on economics, and social issues seem to make
strange bedfellows, sometimes; everyone was freaked out in 1980, when
Ronald Reagan seemed to get the votes of most of the traditionally
socially conservative Democrats.
