Vigilantes Do Talk

Anyone else following yesterday's Over The Rhine microthread
on the Vigilantes of Love List?

Some excerpts, various writers:

"... Over The Rhine's music is often brilliant, but that their two more
commercial attempts (i.e., Eve and Radio) pale in comparison to their more
independently-minded works. I detect a conscious attempt to be "hip" on Eve
and Radio that detracts from the otherwise prodigious talents of Karen and
Linford...."

"....Is depth or quality only communicated by quietness? I've always liked
Eve the most - and now love Films for Radio right with it (I think the
electronic additions update their sound quite appropriately without taking
away the essential KarinandLinfordness of the music). I think it's a
mistake to assume poppier-sounding music is likely less artistic or less
brilliant for some reason.... Best example I can think of: the dozens of 2
1/2 minute chirpy Beatles classics. Even the guys in REM said after
Automatic for the People that it's just much harder to write upbeat music
well...."

"... i agree on [the writer's] assessment of OTR...i also find Eve to be my
favorite OTR album, (with the new one creeping up behind)...and i don't
think either of them is particularly radio friently [sic]...."
