Are you actually in the city?  I live in Maryland now, but I used to have a 
less-than-proper backyard myself in Powelton Village.  It was tiny, and we 
shared it with neighbors-who-became-best-friends.  It sufficed as a patch of 
green (albeit small and surrounded by a high brick wall with barbed wire on 
top of it (sounds dreadful... wasn't) and we did, actually, haul out a 
Hibachi now and again for parties.  

Reminiscing and scratching "spatulas" off the housewarming gift idea list...
