advice

My sisters, my brothers,

I've been lurking for years. This list seemed too much like a
closed off, elitist society when I joined it, so I never bothered to
jump into the fray. There were good people here, to be sure, but there
were a few unsavory types too. I recall some ultra, mega immature
infighting etc.
Well, we all seem civil of late. The good-hearted nature I'd
deemed requisite to truly appreciating Over the Rhine and their efforts
to explore grace, beauty, and the wonder of the human condition has
largely manifested itself in wonderful ways here. I hope to meet y'all
on the other side, if not sooner.
Anyway, I'm no spring chicken when it comes to OtR. I've been
listening since "patience." My favorite OtR moment was seeing them live
for the first time at Rosebud in Pittsburgh. Linford, who I sat
directly in front of all night, apparently noticed my swaying and
singing along in my seat. When the last note had finally died, he
descended upon me and gave me a candle from off the stage, before
disappearing just as abruptly into the sparse crowd. Yes, before I
could even express gratitude, he was off, but the brief exposure
solidified the association between his face with the phrase "nicest man
in show business."
My worst OtR moment, in contrast, came years later when Karen
and Linford were in the city to promote the re-release of GDBD. I left
a training class for a job and flew to the Borders books as fast as I
could, but it was not to be. They were long gone; only some young girls
with (gulp) free promotional materials remained. Still, I kept Linford's
used airline ticket stub that was lying on the stage as a memento of the
intimate and up close concert that almost was....
And yes, I remember watching the legendary episode of "X Files" and
thinking it was all coincidence...or was it?
So believe me, I'm a true fan. Got it? Good, 'cause he's where
you all doubt me. I never purchased the latest edition of "'Til We Have
Faces." (Hangs head in shame.) Now, there are two places around me
that are selling it for $11.99, but I'm currently between jobs. Is it
worth it? (I realize a similar question was just asked, but the
circumstances were different) I fear that, by not buying it now, I may
never have the chance. The inevitable OtR renaissance that is
forthcoming with the advent of FfR shall claim the last copies, no
doubt.
Also, anyone who needs a copy and can trade OtR bootlegs or mp3
rarities, or just wants to pay me the cash, I'll gladly obtain a copy
for you.

Peace,

Matt
