progressive... check out chroma key. i always
recommend that band. in fact, if you buy one and
don't like it- i'll buy it off of you. chroma key
is the offshoot from the former keyboardist of
dream theater (a 90s prog band that's like kansas
meets metallica). anyway, chroma key's albums are
like tori amos, pink floyd, peter gabriel, trent
reznor, and david bowie...

I'd heard the name chromakey but didn't realize the dream theatre connection.
I'll have to check them out now, thanks. Another dream theatre member got
into a very good side project in 2000. Under the name *Transatlantic* Mike
Portnoy from DT, Neil Morse from Spock's Beard, Roine Stoltz from The Flower
Kings, and Peter Trewavas from Marillion (a prog supergroup if ever there was
one) put out a recording entitled SMPT:e.
A couple other progressive notables this year:
Dixie Dregs: California Screamin
Glass Hammer: Chronomotree
I hear Kansas has their first strong release in years but I haven't heard it
yet myself.
Happy the Man has also reformed. woo hoo!
A few notable early progressive bands you may or may not be familiar with:
Gentle Giant: very unique compositions, unusual complicated vocal
arrangements, interesting use of medieval intstuments. check out *playing the
fool-live*
Caravan: From the Canterbury school of progressive music. Lighter progressive
with an jazz feel that didn't take itself too seriously like Crimson or
others. Some very fun humerous lyrics. Check out *for girls who go plump in
the night*
Curved Air: Classically trained musicians that put out some fine symphonic
prog. Francis went on to help form the band *Sky*-- Some fine intrumental
jazzy prog music.
Strawbs: Started as a more folk rock meets progressive with Rick Wakeman and
moved to a more progressive meets folk rock feel if that makes sense. I'd say
Hero and Heroine or Ghosts was their peek albums
Camel. Long instrumental pieces were thier forte'
PFM -Italian prog.
Renniasance: Classical meets prog head on. Founded by Keith Relf of the
Yardbirds with a hard edge but totally changed with his departure and a new
vocalist--Annie Haslam.
A box set of Van Der Graaf Generator (one of my prog faves) came out in
England but so far it hasn't been released in the states....
itsnotasonattabutitsclose, <(who can spot the obscure band ref here)?
