i say:
ahem. indiana happens to be the first place i heard over the rhine,
vigilantes of love, and a number of other beautiful bands. it's also the
first place i drank authentic chai, prepared by people who grew up drinking
it before it hit starbucks. i spent a good twenty years of my life in
indiana, and still couldn't tell you who coaches the pacers. (although i did
grow up watching bobby knight's teams) many of the people i was surrounded
by in my community were extremely creative in their daily lives--whether it
was piecing together an intricate quilt, singing four-part harmony, or even
playing the dulcimer in church. i can't remember having even one
conversation with anyone about nascar races. indiana university has one of
the top-rated music schools in the world, beating out julliard. when you go
to the thrift store in my hometown, you're guaranteed to hear at least three
languages spoken there.

just a few thoughts,
