I agree with the other replies on this one. I am not as good
at describing the producer, Lanois, but a friend of mine has played
for me over several years many Daniel Lanois CDs and CDs produced by
Lanois. I can only compare him to the spacier aspects of Ric
Hordinski especially on _Hush_. "Deeper Well" is my favorite song,
closely followed by "Orphan Girl" and "Where Will I Be". Listen
closely to the lead guitar and how it travels from one speaker to
another: this is what I think of as Lanois. That is probably my
bias for lead guitar. The bass guitar is similarly complex, not
the simple notes of many country songs.
I have liked Emmylou Harris since near the beginning of her
career. I always though of her as blue grass instead of country.
The first time I was introduced to this new style of Emmylou
was as a part of her Spy Boy tour. Over the Rhine opened for her
in Newport, Kentucky. These two bands make a good combination.
Mike Georgin was the bass player at that time. The music played
late into the night for a Thursday. Emmylou gave a very generous
amount of music. The heavy rhythms of the drum and bass was
unexpected and amazing and wonderful.

is what I think of as Lanois.
