was well-respected and liked by all of the employees and would do this type
of thing often.  It was after Sam died that he left Wal-Mart because it
turned "corporate".

I come from somewhat of a Wal-Mart family. My brother and I both worked there for a while and my mother recently retired from Wal-Mart. I think we all three would echo your friend's sentiments.
