Re: Land this sucker...
Well said, Fred. Your point about rhetoric and the way huge topics get thrown
around was extremely important. Thank you for expressing that. I apologize
for my part in fanning any flames. I will let this one go, but I would like to
point out one thing: when I mentioned the "when they came for the Jews" thing,
I wasn't trying to compare anyone to the Nazis, I was just trying to say that I
wanted to keep empathy in mind, and not fall into the trap of saying "well,
*I'm* not a Muslim Arab from the middle east, so I don't have to worry about
getting thrown in jail indefinitely." That, to me, is what that poem is about.
Sorry if that wasn't clear.
And, um, between WWII and the 60s were the 50s, and one could argue that
McCarthyism and the blacklisting might be part of the slippery slope. I
don't think I would want to make that case; I'm not sure there's any causal
connection, but I do think it's a little misleading to imply that the 60s
were an extension of WWII.
I don't know if I was one of the "wonderful, balanced responses" or one of the
"braying asses" (I could see it either way), so I'm going to take a break from
the conversation and go hang out with my grandfather on his birthday.
Peace, all...
