a music fan's best week ever

Hey you beautiful, musical people,

Well, I hate to interupt this intelligent dicussion with trivia, but
there is OtR content; ostensibly this is our reason for gathering, after
all. (Sorry to write about Midnight Oil again, but it is kinda important
this time.)
This week started with Linford's book finally finding its way to my
door. With the wrapping paper, it was like Christmas in July, 'cept that I
paid for it. I haven't read it yet, but you all have seen to it that, when
I do, I've no doubt it will be a comforting source of strength as I enter
the unknown. (school) I think I'm supposed to receive this book now.
That same night, Midnight Oil play my favorite song on Craig Kilbourn.
YAY! The Oils are back on American TV, where they belong!
Then, the immaculate Atlanta show comes across my threshold mid-week.
Has JB been properly thanked? Showing the sorta spirit of giving and
sharing that he did by starting this tree, despite the effort required,
instead of hording the show to share with a select few or using it as
leverage for trades, well, that is special. God bless you, JB! Thanks to
my branch, Eric H., as well. Really, upon hearing the studio quality of the
recording, I realize that it was essentially a moral obligaton to get it to
the masses, so well done, everyone! Your souls, for the moment, appear to
be secure!
Today was even better. A soundboard recording of Midnight Oil @
Bogart's in May arrived in my mailbox. I "won" this from a guy on E-bay who
created a dummy auction just for me, and it cost me $40! Since I was unable
to attend the show, which was as close as the Oils got to me during this
tour, being able to hear this show is a dream come true! To think, I feared
I'd been ripped-off! The guy I "won" the disc from had zero feedback, no
other auctions, and had changed his ID in the past! Talk about triple
threats! I mean, I "won" this back on the 13th of June, and am only getting
it now! The fear this whole thing induced makes me appreciate free trees
all the more.
Oh, here the IMPORTATNT part: I hapened to mention to this guy how
school had kept me from going to the Oils show, and how I desperately I'd
wanted to, especially due to the spiritual conection the venue had to my
other favorite band, Over the Rhine. The guy, who worked as an audio
engineer, replied to me that he is almost certain that he has an unmastered
Over the Rhine show lying around somewhere. Now, I wasn't going to mention
this to the list, as he appeared unscrupulous, but, in light of this awesome
recording I'm being treated to as I type this, I promise that I will get
this OtR show to all of you, should it materialize. I think I'm gonna
e-mail him about this tomorrow.
Having OtR and the Oils as favorite bands is...interesting. Where one
leaves off the other picks up. OtR is more sedate and introspective, with
lovely female vocals, and the Oils are more intense and confrontational,
delivering their message in a "post-punk snarl". OtR is generally more
melancholic, and the Oils are usually more idealistic. But they overlap
too, OtR can rock, be happy, and be direct, the Oils can be artsy,
disturbed, and highly emotional, and both bands express thoughtful
spirituality. Its all good, and makes me wanna celebrate the range of human
differences and the essential similiarity that resides at the core of us
all.
And the Oils NTSC DVD hit the shelves Tues! K&L need to get busy on
this front! Heck, if Saviour Machine can do it...
So, how big is Bogart's anyway? Sounds like a fairly large crowd.

happy,

Matt
