So, because a serial killer in Alabama was a middle-aged white male, we
should look at all such individuals as potential criminals from this
point on? Our justice system used to be based on the ideal of "innocent
until proven guilty." The media was the first to start implying guilt
of all persons charged; the government is now following quit with the
Patriot Act.

(By the way, why is it named the Patriot Act? Perception and spin. If
it was called the "Holding Foreign Nationals Without Charge Act" or
"Justice Without Due Process Act" you can bet the public would be much
less accepting. Nevermind the "Spy on Your Neighbor Act.")

There is a quote that's oft-repeated in a few circles that I'd like to
point out now:

"They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary
safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."

-- Benjamin Franklin, Historical Review of Pennsylvania, 1759.

Is it relevant? I sure as heck think so. We Americans have gotten into
the habit of trusting Dubyah and his posse to rove around the contry
protecting us. I don't personally think he has our (the general
population's) best interests in mind as often as we'd like to think.
