On p.96 of the very good, brand new Purue University Press book,
_Feeding The Media Beast_, by Mark Mathis <mathismedia.com> , the word
"moxie" appears, related to an opportunity missed by J. Danforth Quayle
in his 1988 vice-Presidential debate. 

I have known MOXIE! drinkers, and Quayle is no MOXIE! drinker.
