I used to love this movie.  I think it was Mary Stuart Masterson's character. 
 Thought she was great.

Also, for 80's coming of age type movies I thought Lucas was pretty cool.  
Perhaps because I could relate to his character in some ways.

Nobody mentioned A League of Their Own while talking about women directors.  
Don't know about anyone else but I thought Penny Marshall did a great job on 
it.
Especially liked the interplay between Lori Petty and Geena Davis and their 
characters in general.  She also directed Big which, while probably not a 
great movie by any means, I actually thought was quite good.
