On Cake:
>>>It smacks of the current socially acceptable trend
of mentioning a few "PC" things you like about a girl/women in general,
and then using that as an excuse to throw out the stuff you really want, i.e. short skirt and what not.<<<<

Or perhaps it's dipping into the centuries-old tradition of listing a woman's attributes in poetry. This is parodied as far back as Shakespeare's "My love's eyes are nothing like the sun." It is also detectable in the form of "My Love is a Fever" by Britney Spears. Oh, wait. By Over the Rhine. I get 'em confused.

The tradition has been called sexist. It isn't always. Sometimes it's human and it's beautiful.

Cake's listing is a) a clever suggestion that he wants a woman who is both sexy and tough, and b) a satire of the extravagant expectations put on women in the age of be-sexy-have-a-career-have-kids-be-educated-be-funny-be-droll-be-witty-be-exciting-be-wise-be-vivacious-be-sober-be-bubbly-be-all-the-ever-livin-et-ceteras-possible. I think.

Rhys claimed:
>>liked the lyrics though. and i'm the most unfeminine girl there is, i'm sure.

Not true, cutie. :)

Nathan was talking about Salome. Did he mean he felt like dancing like Salome danced? I wasn't sure. Would he look as good as Bruce would look in a belly dancing outfit. Can we have some kind of competition?

On money: Why do we find it comforting when millionaires are unhappy? Would it be so upsetting if somebody was fabulously wealthy and generally happy at the same time? Money is a brilliant abstraction and a metaphorical extension of the system of human exchange which evolved naturally along with society. Granted, wisdom and regulation are needed. Total socialism, though, is a violent attempt to make people act in ways that people don't act. These have been firecrackers under wagons.

I just wanna say that if conversations go on too long for us, we can always notice the subject heading and skip/delete those messages. That's easy. So when Matt mentions anti-Christian sentiment, what he's talking about is the stink that gets raised sometimes when a Christian conversation goes on too long, or the exasperated asides that start happening in other threads. That exists, it happens. Would it be better to use the delete key?

But I understand the problem. I really don't want to do the Christian band discussion ever again, either, and I'll howl if it happens. :) At the same time, there are going to be Christian interps of the songs, and those are going to lead to theological exchanges. Or maybe they will not, if the hive mind makes it clear that we think anyone talking theology is a simpleton. But we shouldn't oughta do that.

Please, please, please go offlist for any replies to all that Christian stuff I just wrote. The main point I want to make is: don't worry about this stuff, anybody. Just take it as it comes and remember that there comes a time when certain conversations need to go offlist. And please remember that the absolute worst times on the list have come when interlopers have come in here and baited us all with offensive impoliteness.

Out of steam, so that is all,

Fred

PS: I got like 8 digests today. Sheesh.
