:) (this message is about cornerstone, and a few other things thrown in for fun)
yea, i went to cornerstone.
my over the rhine story goes like this:
at the end of 2000 i had been going through a very "are you my
mother?"-esque "are you my favorite band?" sort of inquiry into life, and
i found and picked over the rhine and have been very happy with my choice
of favorite band ever since. everytime that they become more real to me,
i fall more in love with them. like.. every time i buy one of their cds,
or see their names printed, or their merchandise in a national chain, and
then this cornerstone when i saw them around and then saw them live
(twice.), and then talked to karin. everything about them makes me love
them more.
i really don't know what to say about my first over the rhine experience.
but i'm sure that i'll find some words.
i brought my friend along with me for the show on friday. she had never
heard over the rhine before. when the concert was over, we walked for a
few minutes in complete silence and then she said:
"i'm sure that there are better bands than over the rhine. and i'm sure
that there are people with better voices than her's........ [long pause
"oh no! i made you stay up all night for that!"] but right now, i really
don't know who they are."
aaaah. there it is.
i loved the way that over the rhine plays with their songs. and i don't
mean that like.. they play around with them and try new things, like we
play with our hair (karin's hair looked so cute that night). i mean it in
the sense that the songs themselves sort of form this other member of the
band, and when they get grooving, they're not following a path laid out
by the song, but they're all working together with each of the songs to
find a new path. and then their exploring it. and reacting to what they
find.
i loved both of the concerts so much. i think i enjoyed myself on
saturday more than on friday. i was just so.. comfortable. and each of
the songs that they played.. i loved. there were a few moments on that
day (like during lucy) that karin's voice was so powerful that it
physically drew tears out of my eyes. it was like the tears that form
when you stare at the sun.
in all the pictures that i had seen, i thought karin was nice looking,
but seeing her in real life - i firmly believe that she is the most
beautiful person ever. i learned how to be be beautiful:
step 1: have blonde hair and wear it in braids.
step 2: wear an extra-wide rock star belt.
that's all it takes, folks.
the whole "we're glad you're here thing" was really funny. like it's been
said, i'm not sure why.. but it made me laugh for a good while.
a little bit after i got home, i looked at the website. the only date
that's scheduled in the states is for messiah college. that's where i'm
going to school in the fall. that was like the nicest thing that i
could've seen.
i bought linford's book at the fest. it's good. real good. read it 4
times in a row good. read it whenever you want to remember why it is that
you actually open your eyes in the morning.
i was one of those really cool listies that everyone always makes fun of
that goes to the concerts and sees the other people from the list and
doesn't say hi. you all looked really nice :)
i rarely-never write to this list. i think i might actually start writing
now. i think i finally "get it". even without writing, i love this list
so much. i've read every single message in the past 18 months and i have
the highest degree of respect for each and every one of you. you really
are an amazing group of people.
kylie and smitty, i know you had this conversation about your age a long
time ago but i still wanted to say - you are so old. i am so young. so
much younger than you and everyone else. i'm 17.
about this atlanta show deal, i want to be on your trading tree! i have a
burner and can be made useful in that way if it is ever needed.
too bad about those things getting stolen... i was afraid for all of my
belongings all week. i dind't really have a campsite, so i would just
leave my things in random places during the day.
the story about karin in the rest stop is so funny. it reminds me of
notting hill. which was mentioned on this list earlier. i am so on topic,
even when the topic is off.
the christmas in july mp3's made my day better. they are so good to us.
at the beginning of this message, the random comments were cute but now
there are too many of them, so i'm going to cut it off.
thank you list for existing and for listening.
-kate.
