Cornerstone shows

Whee,

Cornerstone was lots of fun. Let's see if I can remember all the
exciting cool things that happened.

The merch booth had Linford's new book as well as a book of
David Nixon's poetry. They also had a very cool set of postcards with
each card describing each of OtR's albums. There was also a
"Post Cornerstone 2002" card which laid out the short term future of
the band (Jack going to Scotland, touring in Europe, Southeast US
in fall, December tour, etc.) but didn't say much that we don't already
know.

Here's the set list from the 7/5/02 show:

   All I Need
   If Nothing Else
   I Radio Heaven
   Moth
   When I Go
   Anything At All
   Little Blue River
   Faithfully Dangerous
   Anyway
   Holy Rain
   World Can Wait
   Ohio
   Jack's Valentine
   Miles
   Latter Days
   ---
   Orphan Girl
   Goodbye

   Some notes:
If you've seen the band, you know how Linford will stack his
organ keyboard on top of his electric keyboard. During the
soundcheck, we heard a loud *boom* and there it was, the organ keyboard
had slipped off and fallen and there was a deathly silence on stage.
The organ had to be removed and a replacement was brought out on stage.
It must have belonged to some other band or to Cornerstone. It looked
very nice and had a fat "major-league baseball park" sound to it.
I asked Linford the next day if his keyboard was going to be okay and
he winced and said, "It's going to need some work."

Cornerstone delayed setting off fireworks until Friday, so they
started going off just as OtR's set began. I bet you never thought
the band would take the stage to exploding fireworks, did you?

Jack had some really long, nice guitar solos, longer than normal
on a lot of songs. Versions of Jack's Valentine and Little Blue River
were even longer than normal. He had the entire half of stage left
all to himself. The stage looked kind of funny with four people
all crowded over on one side of the stage and Jack looking all
lonely on the other side. Karin joked that was in Jack's contract
with the band. Jack only brought his slide guitar and Fender guitar.
One would suppose the rest are on the way to Scotland.

Somewhat disapointing that the band didn't do a new songs at
Cornerstone, especially with them working on songs in the studio, but
I would suppose they haven't had a whole lot of time to do rehearsals.

Brownhouse played on Saturday about two hours before Over the Rhine's
show at the New Band tent. I think their loudest fans were Karin
and Linford who slipped in back of the tent. The keyboard player got
a big, wide grin from them when he slipped the intro to "Little Blue
River" in during their soundcheck. I enjoyed Brownhouse quite a
bit, but I only got to see three or four songs before I had to run
off to catch another band.

   Acoustic setlist:

   Bothered
   Go Down Easy
   Jesus in New Orleans
   Green Clouded Swallowtail
   Poughkeepsie
   Lucy
   Etc. Whatever
   Like A Radio/Ain't No Sunshine
   Orphan Girl
   ---
   Rhapsodie

There was some really heavy band playing in a nearby tent and
you could hear their drum and bass throughout the show. You haven't
lived until you've heard Etc. Whatever with a double kick-drum beating
at 120 beats per minute underneath it. Linford said this would be
their "dance re-mix" version of the song.

The Like A Radio/Ain't No Sunshine song was pretty cool. I hadn't
heard it before, so that was a treat for me.

Regarding Jack's move to Scotland and the future, based on my
conversations with the band and with people close to the band, I
gather that Karin and Linford haven't thought much about what they
are going to do in 2003 or they are not ready to tell us yet. I'm
not too worried. They will probably fly in Jack when they can for
an extended string of shows, play without a guitar player (Linford
has been playing guitar on more and more songs lately), or pick
up someone to guest with them. Should be exciting.

Gotta wrap this up, work calls....

   Jeff
