Fame and America (no OTR)

Hi folks!

I'm a lurker who doesn't post often but I love to read the conversations on
this list. I have a new discussion topic that has been on my mind quite a bit
lately, especially with the new popular tv shows that are out now....the ones
like "The Search for a Superstar." You know, the ones that try to see if
"ordinary people" like you and me have "what it takes to be a superstar", and
the people who dont' make it leave kicking and screaming and crying because
they are such losers for not making it "Big?"

Am I the only one who thinks these shows are total rubbish, and represent
everything that is wrong with today's American culture? LOL

I'm wondering what makes people think that being famous and a household name
is the best thing in the world? Take some of my friends, for instance, who
are local musicians. One of my friends in particular is entirely convinced
that she will be famous one day soon. She is indeed lovely, talented, has an
incredible quick wit, and in my opinion will go very far. But even though I'd
love to see her dreams come true because I care about her as a friend, in my
opinion being famous really means nothing in the whole scheme of things. So
many people do so many wonderful things with their lives and careers and go
unnoticed, while others become heroes because they can sing, dance, or play
basketball well.

Just today my friend called me one of her "fans", and I was actually a litle
miffed at that. "I'm not a fan, I'm a friend darn it!" LOL A few weeks ago,
after I had traveled with her and her band for a few days, she said "Now when
I'm famous you'll be able to tell everyone that you got to be on tour with
me." LOL Pullleeeeeze! LOl I love her to death, but I'd love her if she
worked on a garbage truck.

So I'm just curious. Is it the media and our superficial American way of life
that makes us believe that famous celebrities can change the world? Can they
change the world? Why do we follow them like they are Gods...like
Over-the-Rhine?

Thoughts anyone?

thanks and sorry for the long-winded post. LOL
