Namesies
Intercourse, PA, is a popular one for obvious reasons. My college roommate
tells a story about how he and a couple friends were discussing namesies
outside a campus bagel shop, and a particularly naive friend happened to
walk by, just as my roomie said, "Oh, yeah, I've heard of Intercourse." He
says the look on Mr. Naive was priceless....
One of my fave New England namesies is a village in (I think) Tamworth, NH,
called Wonalancet. It's pronounced as if you were helping someone with a
nasty boil. "Wanna lance it?" heh.....
To drone on.....I live right next to Gloucester, MA, which was recently
listed as the 15th hardest place name to spell in the US. It finished behind
Detroit. I mean, "Detroit"!! How the hell did that happen??
Lurking once again,
Scott
