Ah, but Cockburn was referring to Charles Williams's "The Place of the
Lion", which is even *more* obscure.  ;-)  

But it's an amazing book if you want to see Plato's world of forms combined
with the medieval hierachry of angels, and then have that world start to draw
this world into itself, so that you have Strength, Beauty, and Wisdom walking
about the countryside.  It also does a wonderful job of demonstrating
affirmative vs. negative mysticism.

And there's a Monk song with refers to Charles Williams, too, although that's
more to do with "The Greater Trumps", "All Hallows Eve" and "Descent into Hell"
than "The Place of the Lion".
