Absolutely, yes.  That question has always bugged me, too.  (And I think
it's spelled "Cypher".)

hence his name is lou cypher...as in lucifer.
makes sense doesn't it? now it's all coming together. yes! yes!
there is a ZILLION religious/scriptural overtones in this movie.
a friend of mine even called it, "the gospel in 'R' format".
