DINNER 66: Tuesday, March 7, 2006

Salad night, tonight. I had a meeting after work so didn’t have too much time before rehearsal. I ended up dashing to the drive-through at Wendy’s to get a Mandarin Chicken Salad and a small Frosty and hustling back to the rehearsal space. We had…

DINNER 67: Wednesday, March 8, 2006

I didn’t have rehearsal tonight (nice to finally have a quiet night off!), but Wendy did. We had to run an errand to Home Depot before dinner, so we stopped at Steak & Shake which is very close to the hardware store for burgers and…

DINNER 68: Thursday, March 9, 2006

Jeff Ruby's SteakhouseWe ate at Jeff Ruby‘s Steakhouse in downtown Cincinnati this evening with Wendy’s clients Anne & Larry. This is a steakhouse through and through, from the cigars available for purchase near the bar to the ‘exhibition room’ where the beef is dry aged to the art deco interior (designed by Dave Stephens, who also worked on The Venetian, The Luxor, and MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada). The portions at the Steakhouse are huge — almost overwhelming. The “family style” vegetables on the menu, which advertises that they serve two, were enough for our party of four.

Wendy & I ate the Bluecrab Bisque; Foie Gras Appetizer; Halibut entree; New York Sirloin (cooked a perfect medium-rare); and a side of Mushroom Caps in Sherry and Garlic Butter. We enjoyed a half-bottle of Pine Ridge Merlot with our meal. Everything was well prepared and cooked as ordered. The kitchen displayed a light hand on seasonings, letting the flavor of the ingredients speak for themselves. After such a generous meal, there was absolutely no room for dessert, so we skipped their steakhouse-style desserts of cheesecakes, creme brulee, molten chocolate cake, bread pudding, key lime pie, and more.

WICKED

After dinner, we stepped across the street to the Aaronoff Theater to see WICKED, a wonderful musical about the witches in Wizard of Oz. Tonight was the second night of the new tour, and the show was spectacular and amazing. The voices were astounding as were the sets and costumes. Here are some pictures of the show (which answer the question of “how does she get green?“). Every bit of the show was super-enjoyable. If you’re able, get to see WICKED!

HAPPY MOUTH — March 2006

This evening was another monthly outing of the HAPPY MOUTH SUPPER CLUB, and it was Tracy’s month to pick. Tracy indicated that she was feeling bold after her two most recent picks, so she selected THE CELESTIAL in Mount Adams. The Celestial has an absolutely…

DINNER 70: Saturday, March 11, 2006

This evening, we went to dinner with our friends Brian & Milan to a restaurant about which they’ve been raving since we met them… Sukhothai Thai Cuisine on the north side of Cincinnati.

The restaurant is tucked back off the main road and is difficult to find if you don’t know exactly where you’re going. (Just for fun, here are the exact directions that Brian gave us (we found it anyway): “Sukho Thai is located in the same shopping center as Pacific Moon and Go Bananas, if that’s any help, on the south/east side of Montgomery Road just north/east of Camargo Cadillac (The Pancake House is in the shopping center across the street). This is a few blocks north/east of old Montgomery. There is a light at this intersection, which is kind of a three way light if you don’t count the fourth side which is a huge parking lot. This shopping center is tucked back along a rather long street, and none of it is really visible from Montgomery Road. The street parallels the back lot of Camargo Cadillac. You go down this little street a bit, and turn left at the first opportunity – the restaurant is right smack dab there next to a wig shop in the “front” of the center/village.“)

The interior of the restaurant is minimalist — mostly white, very plain, with accents of color on the walls. It feels very intimate and comfortable. We settled into our seats and began.

We had a wonderful meal of Thai cuisine — appetizers from edamame and their chicken & mushroom soup (rich with coconut milk) to spring rolls (both regular and vegetarian) and seaweed salad. The entrees were great… I ordered Shrimp Paad Thai (my measure when sampling a new restaurant) and it was delicious, a perfect blend of flavors without being too spicy.

We decided to venture into Montgomery for dessert. We first attempted Germano’s (where we had February 2006’s Happy Mouth — see the article) but decided not to wait the 30 minutes for dessert. We crossed the street to Starbuck’s for coffees, pastries, and conversation.

It was a good time.

DINNER 71: Sunday, March 12, 2006

After a long week of many evenings out of the house, Wendy & I essentially hibernated today. With the exception of a trip out to Don Pablo’s for lunch, we stayed at home the whole day focusing on a few small projects around the house but mostly…
