From this site comes this week’s Ten on Tuesday: 10 Things You Want to Do in 2009. In no particular order, mine are:

Continue to lose weight. I’m down approximately 20 pounds since August 2008!

Compete in Culinary Competitions through the American Culinary Federation. This plan is under way.

Enjoy more time with my wife.

Continue teaching at the Midwest Culinary Institute. Been teaching there as an adjunct for a while now, and really enjoy it and intend to broaden my range of class offerings.

Exercise more. Wendy & I joined a gym recently and have been working out there. I intend for this to become a habit.

Process my backlog of recipes into BigOven — my recipe management software. I am seriously backlogged and would love to dig my way out.

Climb to the top of the learning curve in my new job. New jobs take 1 year to learn around here since you must go through one cycle to be exposed to everything. As I write this, I am in month #8.

Travel! I’d love to get back to Las Vegas, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Germany, Dominican Republic. I’d love to get to California, France, Florida (Disney, specifically), and, well, just about anywhere else!

Finally kill my old stupid debt, once and for all. I’ve made SIGNIFICANT progress over the last year, and have only a little further to go before I am completely stupid debt-free (stupid debt being different than, say, house debt or car debt).

Continue to develop my culinary skills and knowledge.

See what comes my way! Take delight in the things the world throws at me. Seek the good in everyone & everything.

In no particular order, mine are:

Homework

Having to wear socks (part of the uniform for my Catholic high school. One day in my junior year, I got HALF a detention once because I forgot to put on one sock!). Never have liked to wear socks since

Math classes. Never liked ‘em, never will

The cliques — all the different groups in the school. I was one who tried to cross the boundaries, and did so with some success

Having acne (this isn’t strictly school-related) and having acne at school (school-related!)

Getting erections every day (in Sister Roberta’s Geometry class) while going through puberty. You could set a clock by ‘em

I joined the Catholic education system (from public schools) in the 9th grade, so I had to work very hard to integrate myself into the long-standing relationships that kids who had always gone to school together already had

The mandatory masses held every so often (once a month, maybe?). As a non-Catholic, I would have preferred to sit in study hall but was not permitted to do so. As a result, I learned to perfectly parrot the mass, even the Latin parts, without any significance or meaning to me (I guess that made me a little more Catholic than I thought!)

From college (pre-computer days!), having to walk back and forth across campus to get the “required signatures” on various forms. I quickly learned to carry a red, blue, and black pen so I could sign the forms myself and save the steps.

That I didn’t appreciate those years then as much as I do now. Despite the seeming complexity, the angst, the drama, and everything else, those years were among the most enjoyable years of my life. It is a rare treat to have knowledge poured into your brain; now, as a professional, we have to fight for any learning. Back then, it was just there for the taking. Would I go back? Not on your life. But I, now, appreciate those years a lot.

Becoming prepared enough to be Wendy’s spouse.

Graduating college with a Bachelor’s degree.

Going back to school and graduating again with a degree in Culinary Arts.

Going to college in the first place – at the time of the decision to go, there were motivating factors that made me consider not going. I’m glad I went.

Becoming a SCUBA diver.

Becoming a home-owner.

Managing my great credit to keep it, um, great.

Developing the ability to identify, set, and complete goals.

Maintaining balance in my life — it is easy to be “sane but overwhelmed”.

I haven’t gotten to this one yet…

I am a scuba diver.

When I was in high school, I used to wear a ‘rat tail’ in my hair (think mullet but the ‘party in the back’ is only several strands thick).

I took a few years of ballet & modern dance in college.

I am a nearly-obsessive cookbook collector.

I used to play Frisbee nearly every day with my friend John. We were good!

I think that the lid should be kept down when not in use.

I am a philanthropist who was born poor.

I mercilessly abuse telemarketers when they cold-call my house.

Inconsiderate drivers really get under my skin.

I do not like to borrow or lend books.

From this page comes this Tuesday’s question… What are 10 things I like to do when I’m alone? In no particular order…

Cook! I love to cook for/with people, but I also enjoy cooking by/for myself.

Sing along to music

Read. I dream of lounging in a hot bathtub and reading a book, but I never seem to get to the bathtub part.

Be on my computer for a long time — really get involved with working, or gaming, or whatever…

Sleep. Sharing a house with my wonderful wife, five cats, and three dogs, sleeping without someone nestled against me is a rare luxury.

Groom myself — trim the nails, clip the beard, and so on. These are things that no one else should have to see.

Browse my burgeoning cookbook collection, wandering methods and recipes, taking the time to imagine the flavors in my mind.

Watch television. We absolutely LOVE our PVR (it truly changes the way you watch television), but one of the (very) few downsides of this technology is that you end up becoming somewhat of a slave to all the recorded shows waiting for you.

Do laundry & chores. Yeah, I know it sounds weird. I really like being caught up on those items, and don’t want to take time away from Wendy to do them, so I prefer to do them when I’m alone.

Sometimes, I like to do absolutely nothing. Not read, not cook, not watch television, not converse, nor anything else.

From this page comes this Tuesday’s question… What are 10 things I hate doing? In no particular order…

Cutting my toenails

Cutting the grass

Growing older

Having to do something that I know will hurt someone — for example, starting a difficult conversation

Getting dental work done

Singing in public

Getting an injection at the doctor’s office

Bringing the garbage can BACK (I don’t mind taking it OUT, I just don’t like bringing it back (I don’t know why that is))

I tend to dislike (hate is far too strong a word) doing things that I don’t feel confident about (see #6 for an example) especially if I’ve tried to learn how to do it and simply cannot for whatever reason (see #3 for a possible reason), though I am always willing to learn new things (and even fail along the way)

Failing.
