From this site comes the following question: What are 10 things that make you feel old? Here’s my list, in no particular order:

  • Forgetting to do this on Tuesday!
  • Failing eyesight
  • Being sore after an amount of exercise/work that used to NOT make me sore
  • Considering being home by 11:00p on a weekend night to be a good night
  • Remembering when I used to go out at 11:00p – on weeknights as well as weekend nights!
  • Feeling the need to write things down instead of relying on my memory (or is that because I’ve got more – lots more – to do now that I’m older?)
  • Being financially well-off & responsible with money
  • Mentally calculating the age difference between myself and my students, and being very aware that I am old enough to be their parents – even if their parents didn’t “start young”
  • Listening to popular music and not recognizing a.single.artist
  • Wondering when Saturday Night Live started letting children host the show!

Still, all things considered, getting older beats the alternative.

What makes you feel old? Leave your thoughts in comments.

From this site comes this week’s Ten on Tuesday: 10 Things On Your To-Do List. In no particular order, mine are (this doesn’t include work-related stuff):

  1. Plan and cost-out a menu for a friend
  2. Drop off this non-disclosure agreement and check out the facility
  3. Reinvigorate two web projects (I’m looking at you, Jo and Karin!)
  4. Develop curriculum for a new (to me) culinary class I’m teaching next term
  5. Configure SageTV (this is a large, multi-step to-do list item) on my HTPC
  6. Install Second Life and explore the virtual campus of University of Cincinnati therein
  7. Make sure our guest room is ready for our upcoming guest
  8. Plan menus for that guest, keeping in mind their dietary restrictions
  9. Evaluate the Autofocus time management system
  10. Secure my next restaurant gig. I’ve got several good options on the table, but haven’t decided which one (ones?) I will pursue.

From this site comes this week’s Ten on Tuesday: 10 Things You’re Really Good At. In no particular order, mine are:

  1. SCUBA diving. Wendy & I are certified at the Rescue Diver level.
  2. Humor. I’m a funny guy. What can I say?
  3. Cooking. I’m a damn fine cook. Should be — I’ve trained enough and love it completely!
  4. Teaching. I really enjoy teaching.
  5. Working with college students. Akin to #4, above, these are skills developed in my job.
  6. Being a husband. I think I’m finally getting good at this!
  7. Traveling. I am a good travel partner.
  8. I’m unusually good at judging if something will fit… For example, if we’re packing the car, I can look at what needs to go in and correctly estimate if it will fit or not. Sad that this is one of my super-powers.
  9. Proof-reading and editing. With all the technical writing I’ve done, I developed pretty good editing skills (and some bad habits — like writing in passive voice).
  10. Setting long-term goals and accomplishing them.
  11. I’m really good at putting my foot in my mouth. One might think after 40+ years on this earth that I’d cease doing that. Not so! Only the frequency has changed — thankfully, it has decreased. But it still happens.

From this site comes this week’s Ten on Tuesday: 10 Things You Want to Do in 2009. In no particular order, mine are:

  1. Continue to lose weight. I’m down approximately 20 pounds since August 2008!
  2. Compete in Culinary Competitions through the American Culinary Federation. This plan is under way.
  3. Enjoy more time with my wife.
  4. Continue teaching at the Midwest Culinary Institute. Been teaching there as an adjunct for a while now, and really enjoy it and intend to broaden my range of class offerings.
  5. Exercise more. Wendy & I joined a gym recently and have been working out there. I intend for this to become a habit.
  6. Process my backlog of recipes into BigOven — my recipe management software. I am seriously backlogged and would love to dig my way out.
  7. Climb to the top of the learning curve in my new job. New jobs take 1 year to learn around here since you must go through one cycle to be exposed to everything. As I write this, I am in month #8.
  8. Travel! I’d love to get back to Las Vegas, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Germany, Dominican Republic. I’d love to get to California, France, Florida (Disney, specifically), and, well, just about anywhere else!
  9. Finally kill my old stupid debt, once and for all. I’ve made SIGNIFICANT progress over the last year, and have only a little further to go before I am completely stupid debt-free (stupid debt being different than, say, house debt or car debt).
  10. Continue to develop my culinary skills and knowledge.
  11. See what comes my way! Take delight in the things the world throws at me. Seek the good in everyone & everything.

From this site comes this week’s Ten on Tuesday: 10 Things You Didn’t Like About School. In no particular order, mine are:

  1. Homework
  2. Having to wear socks (part of the uniform for my Catholic high school. One day in my junior year, I got HALF a detention once because I forgot to put on one sock!). Never have liked to wear socks since
  3. Math classes. Never liked ‘em, never will
  4. The cliques — all the different groups in the school. I was one who tried to cross the boundaries, and did so with some success
  5. Having acne (this isn’t strictly school-related) and having acne at school (school-related!)
  6. Getting erections every day (in Sister Roberta’s Geometry class) while going through puberty. You could set a clock by ‘em
  7. I joined the Catholic education system (from public schools) in the 9th grade, so I had to work very hard to integrate myself into the long-standing relationships that kids who had always gone to school together already had
  8. The mandatory masses held every so often (once a month, maybe?). As a non-Catholic, I would have preferred to sit in study hall but was not permitted to do so. As a result, I learned to perfectly parrot the mass, even the Latin parts, without any significance or meaning to me (I guess that made me a little more Catholic than I thought!)
  9. From college (pre-computer days!), having to walk back and forth across campus to get the “required signatures” on various forms. I quickly learned to carry a red, blue, and black pen so I could sign the forms myself and save the steps.
  10. That I didn’t appreciate those years then as much as I do now. Despite the seeming complexity, the angst, the drama, and everything else, those years were among the most enjoyable years of my life. It is a rare treat to have knowledge poured into your brain; now, as a professional, we have to fight for any learning. Back then, it was just there for the taking. Would I go back? Not on your life. But I, now, appreciate those years a lot.

From this page comes this Tuesday’s question… What are 10 memorable vacation moments? In no particular order…
Please share your comments.
  1. Spending all day building large elaborate sandcastles on the beach, then setting them on fire (with fuel-soaked paper towels) at sunset.
  2. A giant blue heron who appeared at the end of the dock one day, and let us cautiously approach to within 5-6 feet.
  3. Nearly any SCUBA dive I’ve done.
  4. Throwing furniture into the pool (and later, fishing it out and setting it up again) with my brother.
  5. Dinners from Harry’s.
  6. Eating pizza on the beach, sand between my toes, in Punta Cana.
  7. My first (discovery) SCUBA dive with Wendy, on October 23, 2002.
  8. Cabo Roho lighthouse in Puerto Rico.
  9. Bioluminescent bay, also in Puerto Rico.
  10. October, 2007 in Bradenton, Florida.
