John Cox, the co-founder and former project manager of the PostNuke Content Management System this morning posted the following document on the homepage of his website, dinerminor.com

Introduction

Fundamental differences are what drives change. When there are two sides to a disagreement in an OS project you basically have a few choices that need to be made. You can continue on, and agree to disagree. You can continue on and still fight each other every step of the way. Finally, you can go your separate ways.

What I decided was best in the name of progress was to choose the third choice and that was go a separate way. I can not speak for everyone that left PostNuke as to whether they agree with the decision or not, but I can tell you that the developers that left the project are unified in making 1.0 from the 'old' Dot 8 tree a reality. This includes the work on Block Layout, new translation system, and the security and performance enhancements which have been in work for about 6 months now.

Each of the 35 or so developers which left the PostNuke development have joined forces yet again to continue what we started. We feel that this is the correct path for fully realizing the potential of what we started during the original Dot 8 development cycle, and thus have decided to officially announce our intention of building not only a better mouse trap (which will be API compliant) but a better GPL'ed Content Management System for the world to use.

On Sunday, July 28, 2002, PostNuke's own Steve MacGregor had a three hour lay-over in Cincinnati on his trip home to South Carolina from Texas.

Doug Dalton (Apakuni) and Drew Vogel (vogelap) went to the Greater Cincinnati Northern Kentucky International Airport to meet Steve and to hang out & drink beer during his lay-over.

Click on any picture for a larger view.

Drew found a few compromising pictures of Steve online, and created a couple signs. Doug & Drew held the signs up in the airport, much to the amusement of de-planing travellers.

For a closer view of the signs that Steve saw, click either of the links below.

Judy, an airport information volunteer with an intercom was almost convinced by Drew to page "MacGregor the Bad Ass Pimp", but we saw Steve coming up the escalator at the moment she was about to make the announcment.

Steve got quite a kick out of the signs — we could hear him laughing as soon as he could see the signs.

We found a bar in the airport and began to drink. And talk. And drink… Soon, it was decided that Steve needed to try "Cincinnati Chili", so Doug toddled off to find the airport's Gold Star Chili for Three-Ways. Cincinnati Chili is an odd mixture of meat and spices (rumored to include chocolate and cinnamon) that is unlike any other chili you may have had. A "three way" is spaghetti, chili, and cheese. A five way is spaghetti, chili, cheese, beans, and onions. Doug & Drew eat theirs with a fair amount of hot sauce. Steve liked it, but declared that he needed to "drink more" to really enjoy the three-way.

It was great to meet Steve during his short stay in Cincinnati.

Drew Vogel (http://www.drewvogel.com) is very pleased to announce that he has signed a contract with NO STARCH PRESS (http://www.nostarch.com) to write the definitive guide to PostNuke. The book, which is still untitled, will build upon the solid foundation of Drew's Official PostNuke Installation & Getting Started Guide, and offer a greatly expanded look at a variety of PostNuke topics.

This book will be the definitive guide to PostNuke. It will provide a general overview of Content Management Systems, and cover all topics directly related to PostNuke. Everything that a webmaster running a PostNuke system will need to know, from installation, configuration, usage, and maintenance through advanced options such as templating, module programming, and expanding PostNuke will be covered within this book.

A reader that is completely new to PostNuke will be able to pick up this book and become a ‘master' at PostNuke simply by following along to their level of need. The book will walk the reader through each and every step of PostNuke; through installation, configuration, usage, community management — all the way through programming custom modules and understanding PostNuke's API.

The target audience for this book will consist of webmasters, companies, and individuals who wish to run a CMS-type website using PostNuke. Readers will purchase this book because of its clear, informative, informal writing style, complete information, and the logical progression from topic to topic through levels of complexity. They will appreciate this volume because it is complete, comprehensive, and targeted at the high-novice to high-moderate technical skill levels. This book will provide the most complete, current, easy-to-understand, and useful information about PostNuke.

Some of the book's topics will be: An Overview of Content Management Systems, The History of PostNuke, System Requirements, Installation, Configuration, Advanced Configuration, Multi-Site configuration, Managing Content, Expanding & Modifying PostNuke, Customizing PostNuke, Long-term Considerations for Running a CMS-based Website, On-line Community Development, PostNuke Theme Development, Programming for PostNuke (understanding the Application Programming Interface (API) and Module Development Guide (MDG)), and PostNuke Administration.

This book will be available through the usual retail channels and online vendors to coincide with the non-beta release of PostNuke.

Drew Vogel was educated at Northern Kentucky University, where in 1991 he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre with Directing & Performance Emphasis. Additional areas of study include English Composition & Literature, with an area of concentration on Shakespearean literature. He lives in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Drew's goal in writing this book is to bridge the knowledge gap between 'using PostNuke' and PostNuke 'enlightenment'. A reader with limited webmastering experience can pick up this book, and, after reading it, become an expert in using PostNuke.

Mr. Vogel is the author of the Official PostNuke Installation & Getting Started Guide, which will be distributed with future versions of PostNuke; and is the Leader of the PostNuke Documentation Team.

Throughout the years, Drew has written documentation for a variety of software products, though none have been published outside of the product's box. During BBS days, Drew wrote documentation for products such as AreaFix (R. Miranda), Elysium Graphical Editor (C. Brown), and Star-Net/Paragon BBS software (J. Radoff). Drew provided editorial services for the manual for Derek Smart's Battlecruiser 3000AD v2.0 (I know, I know). Additionally, he has written the documentation for his office's internal relational database called RxSIS (Pharmacy Student Information Service).

Today, I upgraded PostNuke on this site to version 0.714. It went pretty smoothly, but there was an error in one function that made much of the site inaccessible for several hours today. That you are reading this indicates that the problem was fixed.

Thanks to ByronM & Gregor, the problem was tracked down and fixed. Apparently, one of the 11th hour additions to the CVS BROKE some things.

A work-around was discovered for sites that run only one theme. In includes/pnAPI.php, change line 891 from:

function pnThemeLoad($thistheme)

To:

function pnThemeLoad($thistheme=’yourtheme’)

Where yourtheme is the name of the theme you wish to run on your site. For example, mine looks like:

	function pnThemeLoad($thistheme=’DrewNuke’)

Nomination for scapegoat of the week to whomever BROKE it, and cookies to ByronM & Gregor for spending the time with me to fix it.

Some pretty big changes, as you can see… The old theme (Maroon) that I was using as the default theme for this site no longer functioned with the new version, so it had to be taken offline until I can work out compatibility. Expect to see it return once it’s working again.
