Mr. Face thrives… He is master of the second floor, and though he proves he can go UP stairs (if you take him down a few and place him there), he has no interest whatsoever in going DOWN stairs… He will sit and cry at the top of the staircase when he feels neglected, and though we call and cajole from below, he just sits and bitches.

His latest trick is learning (relearning?) to drink from the potty. This is brother Ringo’s favorite watering hole, and whether Face had a potty to drink from in his former life, learned from listening to Ringo, or just figured out that here was a BIG water dish — I don’t know. Blind Face has figured out how to jump up onto the seat, balance without falling in, and take laps from the water below. It’s the little things that thrill us.

Merrick and Oliver forget he’s up here and periodically are stunned anew to see him… Merrick hisses and growls, and Oliver just runs away… Dolly thinks he’s great (only cat who lets her sniff his butt for any length of time), and Ringo is his best buddy.

Face weighed in at a whopping 13.5 lb this morning… That’s over twice what he weighed when he came to us 8 months ago skinny and battered… For a cat who couldn’t eat for a month, he has certainly made up for lost time. His favorite new toy is a string of beads we bought him at the fabric store… I had purchased a beaded scarf for myself and Face wanted to play with it so badly… he can hear the beads rattle together and can chase them across the floor.

So we got him his own yard o’ beads, and he’s quite happy (and quite the well-dressed little kitty — ed). We don’t let him play unattended with them, but he’s pretty accurate whacking at them when they are dangled enticingly before him.

Mr. Face rapidly propels himself to the front of the pack at the Vogel household. He is neck and neck in the running for "best cat" threatened only by Ringo... but he smells better than Ringo which gives him the competetive edge.

Tonight Mr. Face met Donetta the animal psychic. She came to our horse barn for a demonstration and everyone thought he'd be a great candidate for a reading.

Mr. Face rapidly progresses. He is master of the upstairs, free from all restraints and closed doors. Blind, as always (anybody got a spare cat retina?), he knows where his food and litterbox are, where the scratching post is, and most importantly, where the bed is. He is quite the cuddlebug, and spends all night (and likely most of the day) comfortably ensconced on our bed. The mystery of the stairs continues to elude him... won't even attempt them, and seems to wonder why we have a bottomless pit at the edge of the hallway. He must have lived in a ranch house in his former life.

On Thursday, March 21, 2002, Wendy took out the wire that was holding Mr. Face's broken lower jaw together to allow it to heal.

Work continues inside his little brain as he slowly rejoins the land of the living. This morning Drew went in to feed him his morning can of A/D (the highlight of both their days), and found Mr. Face sitting happily OUTSIDE the playpen. We wondered if somehow we had forgotten to put him back in it last night before bed, but his escape artistry was confirmed when I got up and again found him contentedly sitting outside the pen.

Last night, Wendy was planning to leave Mr. Face at the hospital instead of bringing him home (she typically takes him in with her in the morning (he's fed, watered, & cared for all day) and brings him home in the evening). But, because they were planning to do a trach feeding tube surgery on him on Friday (today), she was going to feed him and leave him there.
